In the house I hope. Whatever you do, please do not keep them in a non-climate controlled area. Like the garage or a storage shed. Case in point, I was just offered a
sizable book collection to buy. However they had been kept for several years in boxes in an area
that had no electricity. Guess what. ALL of them are ruined. Books take on smells, like smoke
from a smoker and in this case a very musty smell. So for me they are non-sellable. Too bad for
the seller. He is now stuck with a lot of books that are of little use to anyone, except himself.
They also show signs of roaches, whom leave behind roach "markings". So again, keep your
books in good shape. Like yourself. You both will last a longer time.

You can never have too many books.

Panzers in W.W.2

How about something different. Tanks, and you are welcome. A friend of mine, and a customer,
who now lives in Vegas, was in the store this weekend for a visit. He says he reads my blogs.
As he is only a few that have ever said that, I decided to write this for him. He is an armor
builder. In fact he helped me start our local armor club. So here is my first tank book review.
"Repairing The Panzers" German Tank Maintenance In World War 2 by Lukas Friedl.
This is from the Panzerwrecks publishing company. They do a very nice soft cover series.
Now they have the first in a new hard cover series and it is a must have for Panzer people.
In a 11 1/2 x 8 1/2 landscape format ( making for some great full page photos ) and 256
pages, that include 290 b & w photos ( most unpublished ) I am very impressed. I do not
collect armor books, but if I did this would be in my library. What a great book. No real
text. Just lots of photos with good captions and all in English. Get this one.

F.A.O.W.

F.A.O.W. What is this you say. For those that do not know, it stands for "Famous Airplanes Of The World". This is a book series from Bunrindo, the very good book company out of Japan. The series has been around for many years and has changed in looks several times. Mostly with the covers.
This 7 1/4 x 10 1/4, soft cover book now has a gloss black slip cover with a black & white drawing.
With an average of 100 pages, mostly b & w ( some color ) photos, some very nice color profiles,
several pages of line drawings including multi-views these make great references. They are now up to number 143, "Lavochkin Fighters". Although the text is Japanese, they are very much worth having. Remember as I have said before, text should never be an issue with books. So if you have some, good for you. If not, try at least one or two. I think you will be pleased. As I have said before, if you keep your books in good shape they never loose their value. Most of the time they increase in value. So keep things current.

Case in point. Recently a friend of mine passed away at a still young age. He had a nice military book collection. His widow contacted the local club and they helped her out. Then they put her in touch with me. I bought the remainder. Now I will re-sell these to other book collectors. This way the books will get back into circulation with the people that will enjoy them the most.

It is sad to see what happens to some of these collections. They just disappear.

So please, let friends and family know of your intentions. I very much
enjoy this series of books from them, and anything else they do, as they give us some very
good information on a wide range of Italian aircraft. Some of which have not had good
coverage until now. And this is a good one to have. Go get one. The book is full of black
and white photos, color profiles, scale drawings, and a full color page of the cockpit area.
I can not say enough about this publisher. Several of you have written back. Thanks.
This has encouraged me to keep writing. This will be a good year for military aviation books.
I have seen many good titles in the works from all around the world. What a great time to be
in the book collecting business. Sometimes the best are close by, as in the USA. I am speaking
of Jerry Crandall's "The Focke-Wulf Fw 190 Dora, vol.2". This is a must have book for any
fan of military aviation. Even better than vol.1. If I ever had to pick the perfect book, this
would probably be the one. There are others I have seen that come close, but this one is
just a bit better. The in-depth research on this airframe makes all the difference. All 400
pages of it. Get this book. And when you do, send thanks to Jerry.

Check back soon. I have some more book information to pass on. I have had a busy Summer.
The military book business is still very strong, with many new titles out ( and more
coming soon ). Too bad some of them never reach the US. Remember, you can always
contact me here at www.bobeshobbyhouse.com and I will be glad to help you find them.
As there are too many titles to list, send me your want list and I will help out. I have
received some very unique aviation books from other book stores around the world.
The best one that comes to mind is the large, hard back, one from Russia about the
air war over Russia showing both the Russian and Luftwaffe actions. What makes
this book unique is that the first half shows the Russian side, then you turn over the
book and the second half shows the Luftwaffe side. What a great idea. This is the
only time I have seen an aviation book like this, and I have seen a lot of aviation
books. Like reading front to middle, then reversing and again front to middle. Both
actions end in the middle, in 1945. Where the air war ended. I love it. More soon !!!

Books and Weather.

Well today it is raining, sometimes hard, and most of the afternoon. Is this a good thing, or a bad thing. I guess it depends on if you have the original book, and if the new one has any changes. Sometimes they do, sometimes not. So if you do have the original, and they make no changes except the date, you are good. This helps the person who never bought the original, but sometimes hurts the person who has the book and the book has gone up in value. Although a first print date is always a good thing as these seem to hold their value more. If they do make changes the newer one is a good thing to have. You can always sell, or trade, the old one. Remember the old saying, one picture is worth a thousand words.
The non-English text should be only a minor setback. With a little effort you can figure out what the captions are saying. Please, do not let the text problem keep you from having a very good book for your collection. If you stay with English text you will be missing out. Also keep in mind that during World War Two there were many, many nations involved in the air war. Most of these countries have published books about their air war history, and this is not limited to W.W.2. So do yourself a favor. Look twice at these books. For the most part they are all good and worth having. My thanks to Kagero for this wide assortment. The only problem here in the US is that the importer seems to be overcharging. Very good books for the model builder, although somewhat high in price.
Most of the restored aircraft you see in these types of books are accurate, but be cautious as sometimes these museums make errors in colors. So you be the judge and just enjoy the book.

Book values.

How much are my books worth. How many do you need on one aircraft. For example, the P-51 Mustang in use during World War II. There are about 180 different books on this aircraft alone, not counting the use of this aircraft after the war, air racing, the Korean, and other wars, National Guard, foreign, etc.
What is one to do. As a book collector on W.W.II aviation, I have them all. For the non-book
collector I suggest buying the books to fit your needs. Model building. Historical. They came out with two titles, A-26 B/C Invader, and TBF/TBM Avenger, both written by Francis Gallemi. These 8 1/2 x 11, horizontal format books were of the walk-around style and 40 pages, soft cover. Color photos of restored aircraft in different museums around the country, along with some nice b/w drawings, showing a lot of detail both inside and outside of the aircraft. Good information for both the model builder and the historian to enjoy. I heard a rumor that someone here in the US is trying to come out with some new titles. I do hope so as I did enjoy these books.

USN helicopter books.

Here is another nice series of books from Landing Zone Publications out of France. USS Midway. The first title is "USS Midway Air Wings" and is in an 8 1/2 x 11 horizontal format, soft cover with 72 pages, color covers and 87 b&w photos showing different aircraft from late 1945 to the late 1980's. Most of the photos are full page and well reproduced.
It also covers the Commanders, the Squadrons, and the aircraft used. These titles were in French, but some of the earlier ones had an English translation sheet included. Even in French these are wonderful little books. This 6 volume set covers the following aircraft; Cr.42, Mc.200, G.50, Mc.202, Mc.202/205, and Reggiane. What is unique about these is that they show these aircraft in color profiles. With around 50 different profiles in each volume, including top and bottom views and some scale line drawings, these are are must not only for model builders but for aviation historians. Also, each profile is documented to show time, place, and some pilots. These books, and the others from this publisher, come with dual Italian and English text. This 8 1/2 x 11 horizontal 68 page book has 113 b&w photos, 3 color photos, 31 color profiles, and color covers. The reason that I like this book is that it covers a subject that seems to have been overlooked. With so many books on the air and ground war, one on ships is most welcome.

Especially covering ship camouflage, and the color profiles are most helpful. A WW.II history buff,or model builder, should check this title out. I think you will not be disappointed. For a list of the publishers we are carrying see our books page. As you can see, there is more here than just aviation. So I may do a non-aviation review now and then. Besides, after all of these years in the book business, I have seen a wide range of military subjects. I am also open to helping you learn more about a certain title before you buy one sight unseen. And, if you need help trying to find something, I will help with searching. I have been buying, selling, trading, and collecting military aviation books for 38 years. My area of expertise is world war 2, and I have almost 5,000 books in my personal collection. They include the years from 1935 to 1945 as there were so many countries that had operational aircraft. I do not buy novels, and stay with actual aircraft and events. I also tend to buy books for their pictorial content as I believe that one picture is worth a thousand words. This has led to a collection with over a million photos.

My new blog will talk about military aviation books in general, and will include a list of new titles, re-issues, some older titles, and reviews. I also do appraisals for collections.

Please post your comments and ask questions. I look forward to this new adventure.

I currently work at Bobe's Hobby House in Pensacola, FL. http://www.bobeshobbyhouse.com/
